Carved out of the Dharwad  district in 1997 Shares its boundaries with Dharwad district on the north, Gadag district in the northeast 

Lies exactly in the center of Karnataka with equal distance from Bidar in the far north to Kollegal in the far south

Divided into seven administrative divisions namely Hanagal, Shiggaon, Savanur, Haveri, Byadagi, Hirekerur & Ranebennur

Haveri city is the administrative and political headquarters of the district and is  335 km from Bengaluru by road and 395 km by rail

GoK has proposed a 120 acre Spice Park to further enhance the scope of spice cultivation. Dairy development and poultry are major activities Selective breeding of indigenous breeds of cattle like Hallikar, Amrithmahal and Khillarin are propagated in Bankapura Production of tomato among other vegetables highest in the district

Sericulture

Favourable natural conditions for mulberry cultivation Sericulture being practiced for the past 30 years. Ranebennur block is potentially shown and has got 600 hectares of mulberry cultivaiton

Animal Husbandry

Sheep and goat rearing are confined mainly to Haveri and Ranebennur taluks and also to specific communities. Pig rearing is seen all the taluks Ranebennur leads in terms of number of cattle head followed by Haveri, Hirekerur and Hangal
